This isn’t about being able to see the world through the eyes of the oppressed; rather, it’s about paying attention when the oppressed tell their own stories and believing them. But privilege means never having to consider that anyone experiences the world differently from you.
The FBI currently defines rape as “the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will”, which, as Vanessa explained back in April, excludes statutory rape, same-sex rape, forced anal or oral sex, rape with an object and victims who are male or transgender or have disabilities, not to mention those who have taken drugs or alcohol and therefore had their ability to consent
The Uniform Crime Report Subcommittee voted unanimously to change the definition of rape, which had not been changed for 80 years (!) and rape will now be defined as, “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”
Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., became the first openly homosexual member of Congress to become a parent, as he and his domestic partner, Marlon Reis, announced the birth of their son, Caspian Julius, today.
[…] The announcement, which included a photo of the newborn, asked, “No gifts please, just nice thoughts for Caspian, humankind, the planet, and the universe!”
Congrats to the happy family. :-)
Sometimes I feel like America is just in a holding pattern. We’re basically waiting for all the people who are still bitter about modernity to pass away in large enough numbers that those of us willing to move into the future can actually capture the electorate. I never felt that so keenly as listening to Obama speak last night. It’s like living in a house where a cantankerous patriarch won’t let you fix anything up or clean anything, and you’re sitting around watching the house fall apart while waiting for him to die.
Except that the guy urging you to “Win the Future” just sold the car you’re supposed to drive to get there.
