8 Ways Jon Stewart And Stephen Colbert Show More Leadership Than Our “Leaders”

“Comedians are the only ones paid to tell the truth in public discourse. Everybody else—politicians, news broadcasters, religious figures—we’re all paid to be oracles, when in fact we are like a good public-relations man. A good public-relations man keeps you away from the public, and if you have relations, he keeps that hidden.”

In the spirit of that sentiment, here are eight instances when Stewart and Colbert have done better by the American people than the politicians we elected to office. These actions might even recontextualize the “Rally to Restore Sanity”—or at least help make up for its false equivalence.”

More here.

Wonderful article, and truly reflects on the sad state US politics are in.

Jon Stewart Had Been Planning the Rally to Restore Sanity for Months | Splitsider

According to Full Stop’s interview with Daily Show writer Daniel Radosh, the rally was a long time in the making:

Then, in the summer, as we’re finishing the book, Glenn Beck announces he’s going to have this rally and Jon says, “We should have a rally of our own. We should go out there and have a Rally to Restore Sanity.” And I thought, “please let him forget this” – because he’ll do that sometimes, he’ll say something then [drop it]. I thought it sounded like the worst possible idea. A comedy rally? Do not let this happen.

Stephen’s Spit-Take.

Despite both Stewart and Colbert’s appeal to a younger generation, there was an eclectic age range of rally goers, including marijuana-supporting seniors.

Rally to Restore Sanity/Keep Fear Alive

Two-thirds of the National Mall from the Washington Monument to the Capitol appear to be completely packed with people for the Stewart/Colbert rally, as seen from the top of the Washington Monument (1:55pm).”

This, however, may have been one of my favourite signs.

This is brilliant.

Jon Stewart’s Speech at the Rally To Restore Sanity.

“We live in hard times, not end times.”

“if we amplify everything, we hear nothing.”

“The press can hold its magnifying up to our problems bringing them into focus, illuminating issues heretofore unseen or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire and then perhaps host a week of shows on the sudden, unexpected dangerous flaming ant epidemic.”

My favorite part of the Rally For Sanity was Jon Stewart’s corbomite maneuver.

But I’m just a Star Trek geek at heart, so I guess that’s to be expected.

There was also a family holding a sign that read “Our daughter listens to Justin Bieber but we still love her.” Someone walked by them and was like “That really *is* acceptance!” Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a picture of the sign. :-(

Other things to note:

  • Reports are counting rally attendance at over 200,000.
  • Rally goers were seen picking up litter and trash on site to keep the National Mall looking pretty.
  • Ozzy Osbourne was there!
  • I have now been awake for almost 48 hours.
  • Jon Stewart is the MAN.
  • I really wish Anderson Cooper had been there to pick up his tight black t-shirt of fear award.
  • They did not have nearly enough port-a-potties.
  • I’m American but never have I been more proud to identify myself as such than I was today. To see so many people come together to celebrate rationality, logic, being nice to one another, and of course, sanity…it was a really, really moving experience. I’m so glad I was able to be a part of it.

That being said..I’m going to bed. It’s been a long, awesome day and I need to get some rest.

Ban Comic Sans Now

If Comic Sans was an outfit, it would look like this.

I carried my signs double sided for maximum exposure.
